The Loyal 47 Ronin

Cronos

Maurizio Cattelan is an Italian born artist based in New York.  His work is provocative, inquisitive, comedic, and often tragic.  I had the pleasure of viewing his work “All”, the cement body bags on the left, this summer in Venice at Pinault’s Palazzo Grassi.  This artist truly knows how to evoke human emotions on many levels, which is often the goal in art and design.  Cattelan tackles some controversial subjects but he is never afraid of taking risks, which is something all artists and designers should pick up on.  The Guggenheim in New York City is opening a retrospective of Cattelan on November 4th set to run until January 22nd where he will unveil a site specific piece that will no doubt “shock and awe”.

The fonts are authentic old country western fonts.  I think they’re appropriate because Milsap was an influential country singer.  The S and the A are connected to represent his particular style of country music, which is sort of sappy love songs.  I’m not sure about the placement and font of the copy on the right.

Aidan Koch is a young artist and designer from Portland, Oregon with an interesting style.  Her style is somewhat rough and sketchy, but she is clearly a talented illustrator.  Her art and design is very approachable and relative, which is why I enjoy it.  Her illustrations are interesting and abstract, simple and playful with a nice palette generally.  As well as art and design, she also constructs awesome comics, turning her illustrations into meaningful stories.

Grid style examples, both young and old.
